2nd Chronicles 29-33
Numbers 14:8 - Hebrews 11:16
King of Judah
One GOD
Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God,
the LORD is one!
Deuteronomy 6:4
King Hezekiah had a decision to make when he became king at 25 years old. He could either follow in the footsteps of his father who committed idolatry, or he could follow his heavenly Father - the God of Israel.
The choice was an easy one for Hezekiah: he would follow God and walk in His ways.
One of the first things that Hezekiah did was to open back up the doors to the house of the Lord, which his father, king Ahaz, had closed.
He then told all of the priests and Levites to cleanse the temple and themselves. After all of this, Hezekiah and the people began to worship in the Lord's house and they kept the Passover too!
Then the king did something really cool: he and all the people went to all the cities and destroyed all of the false idols, pagan altars, and everything else that didn't have anything to do with God.
Hezekiah understood that there is only ONE GOD! There are no other gods but Yahweh. That's why God said, "You shall have no other gods before Me" in the First Commandment.
God knows that if we have other gods in our life our attention and affection are taken off of Him and put onto those other things.
An idol can be all sorts of things: a person like a pro athelete, a thing like money or t.v., or even an activity like sports or playing games. Anything that takes our time away from God and what He wants us to do is like an idol.
King Hezekiah loved the LORD with everything he had and chose to follow Him alone.
What will you do for God?
