Sweeter Than Honey
Bible Study
The Bible is God's very own Word to us and it is everything we need for life and godliness.  It leads us in the way of salvation and it is truly sweeter than honey!
"How sweet are Your words to my taste,
Sweeter than honey to my mouth!"
                                                 Psalm 119:103

Let's look at Psalm 119:103.  Actually let's back up a bit.
Starting in verse 97 we see the context in which the psalmist is speaking -

-"Oh, how I love Your law!  It is my meditation all the day.  You through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies;  for they are ever with me."

                                                                                         Psalm 119:97-98

Here we see a pure love for the commandments of God, resting upon His ways instead of our own.  The psalmist says "It is my meditation all the day.", which is a direct correlation to Dueteronomy 6:5-8 where the LORD commands His people to love Him with all their heart, soul, and strength and to teach His commandments to their children when they "lie down" and when they "rise up": in other words - all day.  You have to meditate on His Word all day long in order to teach it to someone.

This also shows us how Psalm 19:14 can ring true:

"Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight,
O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer."

The only way the "meditation of my heart" can be acceptable in God's sight is if we are meditating on His Word/Law.  You can also see Psalm 1:2; Romans 7:22; 1 John 5:1-3

Back to 119:
-"I have more undestanding than all my teachers, for Your testimonies are my meditation.  I understand more than the ancients, because I keep Your precepts."
                                                                                                    Psalm 119:99-100
When we seek the ways of the LORD, wisdom dwells with us, even more so than those who          teach but don't obey, or the "ancients" who were far more advanced than we realize, yet their   wisdom is foolishness without the law of the LORD.
          "the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;
a good understanding have all those who do His commandments
           His praise endures forever."
                                                Psalm 111:10

In our obedience to the LORD, we gain wisdom and understanding according to His great mercy in our lives.

-"I have restrained my feet from every evil way, that I may keep Your word.
I have not departed from Your judgments, for You Yourself have taught me."
                                                                                                        Psalm 119:101-102

God gives us a choice - we can choose Him and the way of life or -
we can choose ourselves and the way of death.

If we choose to follow Him and deny ourselves ("I have restrained my feet from every evil way"), then we will be able to keep His word because when we humble ourselves God will lift us up (James 4:7-10).
Jesus said, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross,     and follow Me."
                      Matthew 16:24

As we see in verse 102 of Psalm 119, if we do not depart from God's judgments then this also will help us to deny ourselves and follow Him because God Himself is our teacher! (1 Corinthians 2:10-16).
The LORD says in Ezekiel 36:27 "I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them."

Ultimately, this leads us to verses 103-104 in Psalm 119.  When we understand that God's Word is able to keep us from stumbling and guide us in His truth, then we will realize that it is truly sweeter than honey!
